Mould Mould is a type of fungus, there are many different forms of mould, but mould in the home can cause damage to a property and to a persons health.
Rising Damp When water rises up from the ground and through the building structure this is called Rising Damp.Every house must have a damp proof course (DPC) to protect against any rising damp. Damp penetrating a building If there is a leak at a property that is not being resolved it can cause water to penetrate into the building, one example, if gutters are not cleaned this can cause water to penetrate into the building as the water leaks down the walls.
Condensation An occurrence especially in bathrooms that do not have an external window. Condensation occurs when the moisture in the air comes into contact with cold surfaces, this in turn leads to water droplets and mould growth. It is essential that bathrooms are adequately ventilated following shower use to prevent the build up of condensation. Condensation can be caused by: Drying wet clothes indoors. Showering and not opening the window or using an extractor fan. When cooking not using the extractor fan or opening a window Not heating a property sufficiently.
Top Tips to avoid Condensation: 1. Open windows daily to allow fresh air to penetrate all rooms just for a few minutes daily. 2. Do not block any wall or trickle vents, keep window trickle vents open and clean regularly.
3. Wipe away any moisture following shower use on tiles or glass surrounds.
4. Always use the extractor fan when cooking and the extractor in the bathroom when using the shower.
5. Avoid drying clothes on an air dryer.
6. Turn on the heating in the winter months.
Following these tips will help avoid condensation. If you are a tenant and you have found mould anywhere within your rental property, you must alert your landlord/letting agent immediately, so that the cause can be determined.
Does your washing machine smell?
Indications that your washing machine will need a clean! We take for granted that our washing machines will clean our clothes and make them smell wonderful once the wash cycle has finished. But we can take our washing machines for granted and not take care of them.Washing machines can sometimes cause staining or make the clothes smell bad/stale once a wash cycle has completed? Our washing machines are constantly fed with washing detergents for each cycle, this can caused a build up of washing detergent remaining in the drum, the soap drawer, and around the rubber of the washing machine and pipes. If you can smell a strong mouldy smell it is most likely you have bacteria in your washing machine, to prevent this we recommend that you regularly clean the washing machine filter, soap drawer and around the rubber of the door to the washing machine as least once a month. Also run a hot wash 90 degrees to clean out the pipes of the washing machine, you can add white distilled vinegar and baking soda (2 cups of vinegar directly into the drum of the machine and half a cup of baking soda). We hope this helps you take care of your wash!
